St Micheal the Archangel
Holy Spirit, give me greater awarness of the presence and help of St Michael in my life. Remind me to seek his aid, presence and power in this earthly battle.
St. Michael, who ranks among the seven archangels, is also one of the three angels mentioned by name in the Scriptures, the others being St. Raphael and St. Gabriel.
Very little is actually known about St. Michael. Although he appears several times in Scripture, he is called an Archangel only in the Epistle of Jude:
"Yet in the same way these dreamers also defile the flesh, reject authority, and slander the glorious ones. But when the Archangel Michael contended with the devil and disputed about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring a condemnation of slander against him, but said, 'The Lord rebuke you!'" (Jude v8-9)
The Book of Daniel mentions St Michael as one of the “chief princes” (Dan 10:13) and “the great prince” (Dan 12:1). Just as the names of the angel choirs indicate their offices and particular charisms, the names of individual angels also identify functions or characteristics of those angels. In St Michael’s case, his name in Hebrew and means “Who is like God?” Traditionally this was his response to Lucifer’s desire to be as God. Thus began the “Angelic War.”
Regarding his rank in the angel hierarchy, opinions vary: St. Basil (in his Homily on Angels), other Greek Fathers, as well as theologians like St. Robert Bellarmine, place St. Michael over all the angels, saying he is called "Archangel" because he is the prince of the other angels. Others like St. Bonaventure believe that he is the Prince of the Seraphim, the highest of the nine angelic choirs. But, according to St. Thomas Aquinas (Summa Ia.113.3), he is the Prince of the last and lowest choir of the angels.
Regardless of where he fits into the angelic hierarchy, it is clear that God chose St. Michael to lead Heaven’s armies in battle against Satan and the fallen angels (demons). This angelic war continues today in the lives of each person on earth. When we act with love toward God and others, when we resist temptation, accept grace and act on God's Word, we contribute to the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth and weaken the influence of evil spirits. St. Michael is with us. He is one of heaven's warriors. He is a powerful intercessor, means of protection and ally in our own spiritual battles.
St. Micheal is the patron of soldiers, police and doctors. We celebrate his feast on September 29 along with the other archangels, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael.
St. Michael, pray that I may always follow your humble example as a spiritual warrior,
and may glorify God in my every thought, word and action.
Help me resist temptation, accept grace and act of God's Word.
Prayer to St. Michael:
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about this world
seeking the ruin of souls
